The Position
The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill one Senior Surveying Technician vacancy within the Department of Transportation (DOT). The ideal candidate will be an experienced land surveyor with boundary, topographic and construction-related experience, and will possess the ability to manage a variety of surveying/engineering projects while interacting with divisions within DOT, as well as the Public Works and Planning & Building Departments. Further, the ideal candidate will possess the ability to communicate clearly with the general public on matters referencing historical survey documentation specific to the City of Oakland's surrounding area.

The Senior Surveying Technician sets up and operates survey instruments; performs complicated technical surveying work; acts as Chief of Party as needed; performs other support functions for a field survey crew; and performs related duties as assigned. This is a journey-level classification in the Surveying Technician series, which involves construction and boundary, and position control surveying while providing lead direction to assigned staff. The incumbent performs both routine and difficult tasks which require extensive knowledge of survey principles, operations, and techniques.

Required at time of application:

A valid certificate as a Land Surveyor in Training must be attached to your application and is required in order to be considered for this position. If you possess two years of college coursework in civil engineering, your college transcripts must also be attached to your application.

Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Set up and operate precise surveying instruments and/or GPS collection/positioning devices to measure or establish locations, angles, distances, and elevations.
Interpret construction plans and specifications.
Obtain data for construction, map making, and other engineering purposes.
Set and mark survey monuments; recover buried monuments.
Conduct routine and minor surveys under general direction.
Clean and maintain survey instruments and equipment.
Research maps, deeds, and other survey records.
Update and maintain the City's Survey Related Records and assist the general public in locating available information relating to prior City surveys.
Verify line and check grades during construction.
Assist Chief of Party with daily crew operation.
Compile field notes and sketches of readings and observations.
Perform computer assisted survey data collection, design and drafting.
Provide drawings using computer aided design (AutoCAD) or similar programs, as necessary.
Compile Topographic and Boundary surveys using AutoCAD software under the direction of a licensed surveyor.
Operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.

Minimum Requirements for Application
Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications is acceptable:

Education and Experience:
Two years college course work in civil engineering or related discipline including course work in surveying and two years of experience in field surveying.
OR
Three years of experience in field surveying with a high school diploma or equivalent.

License or Certificate / Other Requirements:

Possession of a Certificate as a Land Surveyor In Training issued by the State of California or one issued by another state of the United States and which is acceptable by the State of California for admission to the Land Surveyor examination.

Successful incumbents in this position are expected to operate automotive vehicles in the performance of assigned duties. Due to the nature of the assignment and the hours worked, public transportation may not be a cost effective or efficient method for traveling to the various locations required. Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Driver's License throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Surveying instruments and equipment.
Basic surveying and construction techniques, principles, and practices.
Mathematics through trigonometry including surveying applications.
Engineering/surveying maps and records.
Public contact skills.
Safe work practices.
Computer systems and software applications.
Ability to:
Use and maintain surveying instruments and equipment.
Operate a computer; use computer aided design software (such as AutoCad).
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Provide direction and training to Surveying Technician.
Perform physically strenuous tasks, such as lifting or moving materials up to 75 lbs; working in limited space areas i.e., drainage structures and pipe lines; walking and carrying equipment up and down steep hills and uneven and aggressive (i.e., Poison Oak, heavy brush, native animals, etc.) terrain.
Communicate effectively.
Drive a City vehicle.
Utilize computer systems and software applications.
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
