Re: GPS on Benchmarks Initiative 2018
Hey Folks, if you have L1/L2 GPS equipment capable of doing 4 hours of static observations at 30 second observation epochs, and a digital camera, I highly recommend you see what stations need occupying in your area and go observe a needed mark. If for some reason you cannot occupy the needed mark, occupy another NGS published NAVD 88 benchmark nearby. I teamed up with another surveyor last Saturday, and we had a good time doing something to help the profession. https://geodesy.noaa.gov/OPUS/getDatasheet.jsp?PID=DC0179
Also, big thanks go to Rich Maher for efforts and this original post, and to John Tosto for his work to shepherd the campaign on a statewide basis. John's GIS map is available at the following link:

Why are we doing this? See: https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/GPSonBM/Recover.shtml
And as if on cue, an email arrives from CLSA about this very subject... Spooky...

Re: GPS on Benchmarks Initiative 2018
Our counties aren't looking so good on the list.
In MONO County the one NGS recommended mark is close to un-suitable for set up on the edge of a boulder. However, we have performed and submitted 2 observations on HR2468 MAMMOTH LAKE MON 7259 (waiting for shared results). We have performed and received one shared observation at JR0751 BRIDGEPORT https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/getDatash ... yle=modern.
BRIDGEPORT needs another observation.
These two marks are heavily utilized by all local surveyors in the region and located at both ends of the county 45 miles apart.
For INYO County, we have performed and submitted two observations on GT1753 CAMERA POST 2 RESET (located in Independence, waiting on shared results)
Don't forget the CLSA Google Doc to include your results:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... 1379604972
I expect this spread of 3 observed marks in a 140 mile corridor qualify for our community obligation.
Anyone headed to Death Valley soon for the rest of the Inyo County priority marks?

Re: GPS on Benchmarks Initiative 2018
I was happy to see that the high priority mark at Point Reyes was observed by NSPS staff. I was planning to get over there because it would be a shame to leave it unobserved, but it was going to mean burning a whole day that I really should devote to other matters.

Jim you deserve a day over on the coast, just to cool off. Go check and see if the NPS did a proper jog.

Re: GPS on Benchmarks Initiative 2018
I got a call from Reg Parks, Instructor and Program Coordinator at Santa Rosa JC, this morning. He is occupying KT2220 this morning, which is off of Highway 1 south of Fort Bragg. He plans to get back there to get the second occupation soon. So, cross that one off the list. He will update the spreadsheet when he gets back in.

Re: GPS on Benchmarks Initiative 2018
I've got a couple simple questions,
Is there any kind of sign up or registration with NGS?
How do you attach pictures to OPUS? or do you need to use DSworld?

None is required to use OPUS, but OPUS Projects still (I believe) requires training and approval.
How do you attach pictures to OPUS?
If you choose to share your OPUS solution (an option on the customize solution page), you'll have the opportunity to upload photos. If the mark is already in the NGS database, you can use DSWorld to submit photos.

Re: GPS on Benchmarks Initiative 2018
So can I not participate in the GPS on BM's if I'm not registered with NGS for OPUS projects?

Re: GPS on Benchmarks Initiative 2018
OPUS Share submittals in support of the GPS on BM campaign do not require the use of OPUS Projects. Simply collect the data in accordance with the OPUS Share requirements and take the required photos and submit them to NGS.

Re: GPS on Benchmarks Initiative 2018
Message from NGS Pacific Southwest Regional Advisor (CA, NV), Dana Caccamise:
"The "GPSonBM"project has been extended by 3 weeks. Bottom line: Data has to be submitted by Friday Sept 21 and the data will need to be collected a couple days prior. Announcement banner is located here:
https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/
I am both surprised and happy to hear this... Please spread the word!
Dana"
Let's get out there and hit the BMs that still need our attention... REMEMBER TO DO MISSION PLANNING!
ALSO - REMEMBER TO LOG THE ANTENNA HEIGHT OF YOUR ANTENNA'S REFERENCE POINT.

Thank you to Caltrans District 9-- Looks like they took care of Inyo County including about 8 observations around Death Valley. Mono County's one priority mark also "done" with one of our observations and one from Caltrans District 9.
The extra 3 weeks will be good to add more, maybe western Nevada, Area 51 anyone?

What's up with the Bay Area guys? HT0024 in Alameda is a Priority 1 mark, but it hasn't been observed yet.
