James R. Dorsey, PLS
We are saddened to announce the passing of James R. Dorsey, PLS. Jim passed away in March at the age of 81.
Jim began his surveying career in 1955 working as a title engineer for Title Insurance and Trust for six years. For the next ten years, Jim worked for Caltrans, CA Department of Water Resources, and for the CA State Lands Department. During the next 8 years, he returned to title work at Safeco Title where he was the founder and manager of their Title Research Department in Los Angeles. In 1975, during his time at Safeco, Jim became licensed as a Professional Land Surveyor in California.
In 1979, after leaving Safeco, Jim established his own Company, James Dorsey & Associates, in Simi Valley and in Palm Springs for the next seventeen years. While he had his own company, Jim was appointed by California State Gov. George Deukmejian in October 1984 to serve as the Land Surveyor member of the Board of Registration; he served until November 1991.
While on the Board, Jim served on many committees and was the Board liaison to the Land Surveying Technical Advisory Committee. Jim was the Board Vice President from July 1986 through June 1987 and was the President from July 1987 through June 1988. Jim was the first Land Surveyor to serve as President of the California State Board of Registration.
In 1996, Jim moved to Las Vegas where he worked as the Deputy County Surveyor for Clark County, Nevada. When he retired, he moved to Reno and started his own surveying company which he ran for the next 15+ years. Jim was also a sought-after speaker at many surveying conferences.
Jim had a long and varied surveying career and he will be greatly missed.
