The City of Redding is establishing an eligibility list to fill one Full-Time Survey Party Chief
vacancy in the Engineering Division, as well as future vacancies that occur during the life of the
list. Incumbents in this position will perform in a lead capacity in the field and assist in
coordinating the activities of the survey party; provide a variety of professional and technical
survey assistance and direction related to public works projects.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
The successful candidate will perform a wide range of duties, including but not limited to the
following: Perform as lead individual in the field and assist in the coordination of the activities of
survey party. Establish points, lines and distance for topographic, property, and construction
field engineering surveys. Establish and re-establish property and right-of-way lines and
location of improvements. Provide City departments and the public with information and legal
data relative to design, construction, and boundaries of projects. Place monuments, prepare
final map and legal descriptions indicating boundaries or corner surveys, and field checks
property owned or to be acquired by the City, including all types of easements. Prepare legal
descriptions and other property matters required by the Subdivision Map Act, such as parcel
maps and final maps; Prepare, review and certify legal descriptions, parcel maps, final maps,
plats, and other topographical survey information using GIS computer programs and other
related technology. Provide assistance to design engineers in determining detail of grades and
geometrics on street, sewer and other construction projects. Field meetings with contractors,
inspectors, and the public. Perform field checks on parcel and subdivision maps prepared by
developers. Perform office survey calculations and checking and field note reductions including
maintenance of field books, completion and review of survey forms, adjusting horizontal and
vertical control data, and checking all transcriptions and calculations made by other members
of survey party. Perform a variety of professional office surveying duties including gathering
survey data from notes, maps, deeds and other records. Maintain City survey records and filing
of related data. Oversee the adjustment and maintenance of surveying equipment, supplies,
meters, gauges, theodolites and distance meters. Initiate orders for surveying equipment and
supplies. Develop and maintain budget. Prepare contract specifications for City survey
contracts. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the job classification.
Ordinances and regulations relating to land use - Land Surveyors Act and Subdivision Map Act;
relevant laws and regulatory codes dealing with development, construction, surveying and real
estate; surveying methods, practices and techniques; methods and techniques used in the
design and construction of a variety of public works projects; working knowledge of land
surveying principles and practices as applied to preliminary location, property, construction,
precise traverse, precise leveling and topographic surveys; working knowledge of plane
geometry and its application to land surveying; algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as applied
to technical engineering and surveying calculations; care, use, adjustment and maintenance of
survey instruments and equipment; Geographical Information System mapping computer and
related technology; and modern office procedures.
Interact effectively with the public and employees. Research public records and gather data;
use all types of survey equipment; exercise independent judgment; read and interpret maps
and plans for location and construction surveys; interpret legal descriptions; read and interpret
complex property descriptions; make office and field calculations, prepare freehand drawings,
drafts, maps and maintain notes and other records; prepare clear, concise and complete
reports and records; operate personal computer; and communicate well orally and in writing to
other City employees, contractors, and the general public.
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and
abilities is qualifying; typical education would include a high school diploma, or equivalent.
Typical experience would include five years of relevant progressively responsible survey work;
and one year of supervisory experience.
Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten
days of appointment.

Examination Process: An oral board interview, online written examination, practical exercise,
or any combination thereof, may be administered.
