ISSUE DATE: 04/28/21 FILING DEADLINE: Continuous. THE POSITION: Under general supervision, leads and is responsible for field survey operations; plans and directs the work of a survey crew performing preliminary location, land, topographic and construction surveys; leads and instructs crew in job and work procedures; interprets construction plans for errors and omission to assist Engineers or Construction Inspectors in problem resolution; and performs other work as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Plans the details for specific survey projects; researches record information; organizes, assigns and directs the work of a survey crew in conducting preliminary, location, construction, property, topographic and other precise surveys. Does the more complex field computations such as computing curves, missing distances, deflections, closures, bearings, and slopes; records and submits field notes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applications will be accepted only from those applicants who clearly demonstrate on the COMPLETED Application and Supplemental Questionnaire that they meet the below requirements:
Survey Party Chief I:
• High School diploma or GED equivalent, AND
• Two (2) years of progressively responsible technical experience in surveying, AND
• Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver’s license.
Survey Party Chief II: In addition to the above:
• Land Surveyor-In-Training Certificate (LSIT), OR
• Land Surveyor License (LS), AND
• Two (2) years of experience at a level equivalent to Survey Party Chief I.
OTHER MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: California Land Surveyor's Act; surveying principles, practices and equipment which pertain to construction, property and topographic surveying; field survey safety practices; computer applications relating to surveying; and techniques of drafting and mapping. Ability to: Analyze and interpret complex engineering construction plans and specifications; work independently in the field; maintain effective working relationships with contractors, property owners and the public; plan, direct and check the work of survey crew members. Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions: Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
EXAMINATION (WEIGHTED: 100%) The method of examination may include one or more of the following: written exam; oral exam; evaluation of education, training, experience or other qualifications as shown by the application, or by other information submitted, or by the record; questionnaires submitted to references; or any other appropriate measure of fitness. A minimum passing score of 70% is required. NOTE: Admission to the Examination may be limited to those applicants who demonstrate the best combination of qualifications. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed admittance to the Examination. Employment applications must be properly completed in accordance with instructions on face of application form. All pertinent information needed to determine that the applicant meets the minimum qualifications must be shown on the Application, Supplemental Questionnaire and certificate (if applicable); otherwise, the application may be rejected.
